Question # 21: Sat I'm taking Chester to meet a friend at a xc in DE to get a lesson - my FIRST xc lesson!! SO, since I know standing martingales are not allowed in eventing xc, I put on the (new) running attachment.

It is prob too short, and he does have a long neck, but I HATE it. I just did a couple x's, and it felt like I couldn't get his head up after, and he couldn't put it up. Sunday I'm going to a practice xc event in MD, and I think I'll just skip it altogether. You've seen him...no high head problems. What do you think? (Andi)

Hi Andi!

Martingales are definitely not required, so if you feel that you don't need one go ahead and go without it. But it does sound like you may have it adjusted too tightly. When a running martingale is correctly adjusted, it should have no influence on the horse unless they bring their head way up in the air, or are tossing their heads to avoid the action of the bit.
