Hi Karen!

This is a very common problem for riders to have in varying degrees. Some horses (such as yours) always seem to be looking for that fifth leg (your hands) to lean on for balance and support... and others just have minor instances of this problem during difficult movements and temporary moments of loss of balance. Your horse needs to learn to respond to half halts correctly, so that he can carry himself, instead of trying to use you for support.
