...and I lose my brakes! What is a good step-up bit just for these situations? Is something with a curb chain (like a Kimberwicke) a better choice than a thinner snaffle? Or vice versa? Any reasons to consider one type over another in general? (Sharon)

Bits are such an individual thing! It would be good for you to try a few different ones to see which would work best for your particular problem. However, I do have a suggestion for you!
