Question # 202: What is the difference (if any) in the amount of contact you should maintain in the free walk and free trot? I know the free trot the horse should still be on the bit, just be allowed to stretch down. Is the free walk the same? (Kymbre)

Hi Kymbre!

You are correct that in the trot stretch the horse should take the bit down, and still be reaching into the contact, especially the outside rein. If the reins become "empty" there is a good chance the horse is just dropping its neck, and minimizing the stretch over the back. Read this article for a refresher on that subject.
