You don't really improve your [trot lengthenings](https://www.myvirtualeventingcoach.com/articles/trot%5Flengthenings) by working directly on them, per se. You improve them by doing exercises which increase the engagement in your horse's hind legs - [half halts](https://www.myvirtualeventingcoach.com/articles/the%5Fmysterious%5Fhalf%5Fhalt), the [almost walk exercise](https://www.myvirtualeventingcoach.com/articles/the%5Falmost%5Fwalk%5Fexercise), etc. When you have more engagement in your horse's trot, try your lengthening again, and it is likely that it will be improved.
