I don't even think about aiming a young or green horse at a jump until I have them 100% [in front of my leg](http://www.myvirtualeventingcoach.com/articles/teaching%5Fyour%5Fhorse%5Fto%5Fstay%5Fin%5Ffront%5Fof%5Fyour%5Fleg) on the flat. If you do, and the horse thinks about stopping, you will have no recourse, and will end up teaching him that he doesn't have to jump if he doesn't want to.
